Vagabond 42 s/v STARDUST

I am John McCahan and with my wife, Sue Stockman, we are the former owners of the Vagagond 42 STARDUST, which was sold to Al & Jean and the boat will be known as Ryen's Quest in the future. We owned STARDUST for 15 years and made lots of changes to her over the years. We cruised her from Annapolis, Maryland to Trinidad, spending a total of 10 winters in the islands of the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean.

Hi John,
My 42 has a badly rotting bow sprit. It looks like the claw type anchor the previous owners used dug into the bottom of the bow sprit and the rot began. Do you have any experience in replacing this? I'm thinking of making a new one myself but am still in the early planning stages. Didn't know if you knew what type of wood would be best to use and maybe had a detailed drawing of how it’s built. Looks like it’s basically a 4X4 as the center core going from the front to the forward side of the Sampson Post with side planks glued on either side of the 4X4 extending past the Sampson Post. Any help would be great. Thanks, John, s/v Eleanor Rigby (1984 V42)

Hi, my name is Guy Norton and I rebuilt my 47's bow sprit. Mine was laminated mahogany. But I used 1x8's cut to fit from old growth pine that I was using to build a wood motorsailor. If you would like to know the details just email me ok. I even have some pictures I could send you, if you wish.

Take care,

Guy

Thanks for the offer Guy but the V42 bow sprit has to fit thru an oval hole in the bow so really has to be the original size. I’d like to keep it made of only the 3 pieces. I don’t know what the present one is made of but am being told by several people that most use Douglas fir when making new ones. Mahogany was also mentioned. Thanks for your offer. JC
